Dr. Don Robison is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Family and Community Medicine and Director of Community-Engaged Learning at Eastern Virginia Medical School (EVMS) in Norfolk, Virginia. He has worked at EVMS for seven years, and was instrumental in creating the community-engaged learning program. He would tell you that his current position is about helping medical students "see" the people around them and compassionately and systematically respond to who they see. He has been active in community-oriented service for over 40 years in contexts as diverse as the federal government in disaster relief, to working with under-resourced children in international contexts. He currently serves as the Co-Director of the EVMS Cultural Humility initiative.
Dr. Robison is a retired Coast Guard officer and has experience with activities ranging from strategic planning and implementation of enterprise-level organizational change to command of a cutter. He led the web training implementation group for the Coast Guard, and served on federal distance-learning and performance technology working groups. He has been a practicing instructional designer and performance technologist for over 30 years and recently served as the Senior Editor for the Journal of Applied Instructional Design.
