Dr. Richard Conran, PhD, MD, JD, FCAP, Professor and Chair, Department of Pathology and Anatomy, Eastern Virginia Medical School, Norfolk, VA is a 30-year Army veteran, board certified in anatomic, clinical and pediatric pathology committed to academic pathology. His educational background consists of a PhD in experimental pathology from the State University of New York at Buffalo, his medical degree from Albany Medical College, his postgraduate training at Fitzsimons Army Medical Center, Aurora, CO and a law degree from the Washington College of Law.
His military career led him to supervise the pathology laboratory at Fort Belvoir, Virginia, complete a tour at the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology, Washington, DC and serve as Professor of Pathology and Emerging Infectious Diseases at the Uniformed Services University in Bethesda, MD where he pursued his passion in undergraduate medical education, served on their executive curriculum committee and as president of their faculty senate and as an affiliate staff pathologist at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, formerly the National Military Medical Center, Bethesda.
Upon his retirement, after 30 years in the US Army, he joined EVMS in 2013 as Pathology & Anatomy Chairman taking an active role in medical and graduate student education, developing a Master's degree program for Pathologists' Assistants, obtaining CAP accreditation for their biorepository and serving as medical director for Pathologists' Assistant and Physician Assistant Master's programs. He has participated in several national organizations, e.g. National Board of Medical Examiners, the Association of Pathology Chairs, LCME survey team member and on the editorial board of Academic Pathology.
