overview

  • Dr. Nyalwidhe holds a Masters of Science Degree in Medical Parasitology from the University of Nairobi, Kenya. He earned his doctorate in Molecular Parasitology and Proteomics from the Philipps-Universität in Marburg, Germany. He completed his post-doctoral training and worked at the Philipps-Universität in Marburg, Germany before joining EVMS. In Marburg, he worked on protein analytics and the role of host-pathogen interactions in the pathogenesis of Plasmodium falciparum malaria. A major focus of his current work is on the application of proteomics, glycomics and mass spectrometry in the field of cancer biology and general biomarker discovery. Dr. Nyalwidhe is a founding member of the Leroy T. Canoles Jr. Cancer Research Center and Director George L. Wright Jr. Center for Biomedical Proteomics at EVMS.

research overview

  • The Nyalwidhe Lab focuses on understanding the molecular basis and signaling mechanisms that are involved in cancer progression and the role of host-pathogen interactions in mediating microbial infections disease pathogenesis. The goal is to identify and characterize molecules and mechanisms that mediate progression to aggressive forms of cancers and to uncover the mechanisms that modulate microbial disease pathogenesis. These studies utilize advance qualitative and quantitative mass spectrometry for functional proteomic and glycomic strategies to identify biomarkers and pathways that may play a role in disease pathogenesis. Ongoing work focuses on the development of protein biomarkers for aggressive forms of prostate cancer, the role of glycosylation in aggressive prostate cancer progression and the role of viruses on the etiology of type 1 diabetes.
